A new year at the Garden Club is about to begin. However, there has been much activity since our last meeting in May. At the end of June Donna Marshall graciously hosted the New Member's Tea, Carol Shively and her team provided delicious food and a harpist played by the pool. The group of 20 new members is outstanding with varied talents and experiences. I know we will all be wanting to greet and meet them.

The prayer garden that our Club, led by Karen Bowden, helped install on the grounds of our meeting hall was dedicated on Sunday, August 17. Our Club was well represented. Barbara Pieper read a paper - almost a poem - in which she wrote about this garden, making reference to how each of the plants we put into the garden is mentioned in the Bible.

The Jacaranda Committee has held two meetings as it reorganizes itself after Pat Miller decided it is time to turn over the leadership. Pat took over the committee after she retired from being president of the Club in 2001. It is often hard for a committee to find its way after a dynamic leader steps down. However, this group of talented, dedicated people is well on its way. We will be hearing from them later this year. In the twenty years of the planting program over 1400 trees have been planted in San Diego city and county, many of them during Pat's tenure as committee chair. The Jacaranda Tree was designated the official tree of San Diego in 2000, in part through the efforts of our Club.

Certainly the most educational meetings I've attended this summer have been with the Master Gardeners and Conservation folks. As they did last year, these two committees, headed by Jodie Bruhn and Heather Hazen, have joined forces, and their tables will be next to each other in the meeting hall. It is invigorating to listen to all of their ideas. If we all changed our lives along the lines they recommend, our planet would be “greener” by far. Do read their articles in the Spindrifter and check their tables at the meetings. I promise that you will be amazed.

The Yearbook is published; the Schoolyard Gardening Grants committee has begun its work; the Executive Committee and the Governing Board have met. Excellent programs and workshops have been organized. Is it possible that the year ahead could be better than ever? I think so, and I am eager to see all of you on September 25.
